McCabe design, headed by Barry McCabe, are a multi-disciplinary design company who have been delivering solutions for our clients since 1989. Their services range from retail and interior design, leisure and hospitality to graphic design and event & exhibition design.
For this project Barry and the team were tasked with designing a retail environment that embodied the ethos of the Bear Market Coffee.
Bear Market Coffee was born from humble beginnings in 2009. When Stephen and Ruth Deasy, recently qualified architects, struggled to find work during the recession. They decided to take the leap and open up their own stall in the Blackrock Market. After becoming one of the first speciality coffee shops in Dublin, they have quickly grown to 7 shops across Dublin.
Their architectural background shows in their business, each coffee shop boasts a unique and stunning design, ensuring no two locations are the same!
Barry chose to use of Evergreen Moss to create a natural and acoustic wall surface to be a focal and feature detail within the store. Evergreen Moss is a 100% genuine moss panel developed for fast and straightforward self-installation. The Evergreen Moss is specially preserved reindeer moss which is maintenance-free. It does not require feeding, watering or light! It can also absorb up to 90% of the sound, so it is a fantastic acoustic.

‘’Working with our client Bear Coffee has been educational to our design team in how we rationalise our design briefs and as to how we deliver successful solutions. While our business has always been cognisant our requirements to deliver on client objectives, the values and ethos of Bear Coffee and their respect for the environment has made us more aware of our own responsibilities in our design evaluation of a client brief.
Our approach in delivering a design solution was to obviously create an environment that is appealing and comfortable to the customer, ergonomically workable for the staff and delivering a wow factor in the visual. Yet we wanted to utilise where possible environmentally friendly and carbon neutral materials where possible.
The selection of birch plywood created a clean and modern aesthetic that resonated with the Bear customer, but we coupled this with wall finishes from SURFACE WOW – utilising a preserved reindeer moss that creates a natural and acoustic wall surface that has proven to be a focal and feature detail within the store.’’
