Dressed to Impress with Double Denim, Gold with a Touch of Retro
On the outside, it’s like any non nondescript building in an industrial park. Yet inside this building is a canteen that is dressed in double denim mixed with gold, concrete and galvanised steel. It’s energising, uplifting and unexpected.
It’s not everyday that you sit having your cheese and tomato sandwich in a room that is literally dressed to impress. Every surface has been restyled and upstyled to transform an ordinary space into an extraordinary space.

The brief for the change in the canteen was to add a bit of life to it. It’s the first place, really, that staff and suppliers come into before the day starts or any meeting begins. So it was important to create something that was inspiring and energetic for the business.
They didn’t want to spend a ton of money on the renovation and because it’s a working canteen, it couldn’t be closed off for days.
It started with good design and a range of architectural films with different finishes. The architectural films that Surface Wow uses offer more depth, more choice to any re-design. In this kitchen, a denim finish was used on the units, a concrete finish on the counter tops, a gold finish on the fridge (and ceiling) and a modern fire door was transformed to an old look door.
The lino on the floor was resurfaced with film and a design of old retro tiles; same with the splash back tiles on the wall.
Not only is this look really easy to create, it’s durable and hard-wearing. It’s long-lasting so hot plates and cups can be placed on the film without leaving marks. This canteen is used by 20 people or more every day so it had to be practical.
Giving the transformation an added Wow factor, a Wow Wall was created using galvanised steel and fabricated letters of the word ‘HAPPY’ wrapped in real living moss.
The end result was no stress, no mess and a canteen dressed to impress. It is transformed from the canteen it was and it was very simple to do. It has become a talking point and everyone that comes in, stops, stares and says ‘wow’.
The Wow Factor is created and it’s a lasting memory for recruits, staff and suppliers alike.
